Our Story

Faith Table

Carl Greene, who was actively involved in the YES! Campaign, saw an increase in LGBT involvement. While the ordinance failed, it caused Carl to desire continued momentum. As a result, two ideas emerged: 1) the creation of a Faith Table, a gathering of progressive faith leaders and 2) the desire to see an organization developed for the LGBT/ally business community.

LGBT Resources Discussion

Carl Greene and Duane Wade discussed what the lack of resources (coaching, networking, mentoring, etc.) available to LGBT professionals in Chattanooga.

A Need for a Professional Organization

Carl and Duane co-hosted a small group of gay professionals. The group unanimously agreed that there was a need for a professional organization. The organization would not solely be a social networking group and would not duplicate other important LGBT efforts that currently exist. The group recommended having a larger, inclusive meeting.

One Northshore

Mark Hite, of Keller-Williams at One Northshore, provided a large conference room for a meeting of approximately 50 LGBT professionals. The group members participated in group discussions regarding needs this potential organization could address in the professional community.

Continuing The Discussion

Carl facilitated a meeting of 25-30 professionals to continue the discussion of how to develop a group for LGBT business people and their allies. The use of the word “business” was decided to include business owners, entrepreneurs, LGBT people who work in a variety of professional settings.

The first draft of a purpose statement was developed by John Dixon and Duane Wade.

The Walden Club

Carl and Duane co-hosted a social at The Walden Club. Chris Taylor was asked to join the steering committee that evening.

Carl and Duane met with Molly Cooper and Nick Wilkinson at Mayor Berke’s office, along with Rob Bradham, VP of Public Strategies at the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce. They offered their support for the group’s presence in the Chattanooga community.

Mayor Berke's Conference Room

James McKissic, Director of Multicultural Affairs Office for the City of Chattanooga, hosted a standing-room only group (approximately 50 people) in Mayor Berke’s conference room.

The group’s new name, OUTLOOK, and posters with the logo (created by Anna Golladay) were unveiled. Additionally, Mayor Berke, Nick Wilkinson, Rob Bradham, and Councilman Chris Anderson spoke about the importance of OUTLOOK and expressed their support for its development

The OUTLOOK steering committee members (Carl Greene, John Dixon, Chris Taylor and Duane Wade) outlined the next steps for the group, including the formation of a leadership council.

Social on Forest Avenue

Social at 240 Forest Avenue, hosted by Michelle Peterson, where the website business directory was introduced by Chris Taylor. Discussion about what being on the website directory might mean in terms of “coming out”. Chris received back a number of completed forms from those present.

St. Mark's Methodist Church

Steering Committee met at St. Mark’s Methodist church on 4/11/15 with others interested in leadership roles in Outlook to discuss plans for meetings, events, identifying needed committees, roles, and continuing to evolve the vision and purpose of the group. We heard from Kyle Miller about how critical it is that we have effective communication within the group and to the community at large.
